Another "industry only" product introduction,

GARIF - where did you find information on VTSS licensing Kinetics from Seagate? All I could find was this from the most recent earnings call:
"While these are new and growing markets, there’s also some exciting new developments a bit farther out on the horizon. Just as Gigabit Ethernet moved into IoT a year back, we’re now seeing Ethernet move into storage area networking. Last quarter Seagate introduced what they call the Kinetic drive, an enterprise-class disk drive that dramatically simplifies storage for data center applications. In Seagate’s words, it strips out layers of inefficiency from legacy architectures and introduces a new approach optimized for scale-out applications and data center needs. It’s getting tremendous interest in the industry. The good news for Vitesse is that this architecture replaces SAS/SATA storage networking with Ethernet networking, opening a large new market for us. Again, we find that we have an ideal low-power solution for this emerging application. We’ve already won designs in this new segment. One was displayed two weeks ago at the Ethernet Technology Summit. This is another strong validation that Ethernet will continue to migrate into new markets, displacing other networking technology. As a Cisco technology officer(?) said at the Technology Summit, Ethernet ubiquity trumps all."

The above, plus the mention of half million bucks used to licence some technology brought me to the Seagate conclusion.
Seagate announced Kinetics last October, I surmise Vitesse started the process around that time and with her new ability to bring products to market in months instead of years, could easily have started sharing her enhanced kinetics prototypes by march.
The first Kinetic-based storage system product was introduced at the CeBit conference in March. Is my thinking off base??
Posted by GARIF - 12 years ago
I don't know. It's a very interesting conclusion though. Interesting.
Posted by phobos - 12 years ago
if possible, would you please post where the mention of "half million bucks used to license some technology" was from.

The following quote from page 4 of Q2 call, May 6, 2014
"Investment activities, net, including capital expenditures, totaled $170,000. We
expect a total of about $500,000 to $600,000 in the third quarter, higher than the
second quarter, due to payment for an IP license."
A board member wrote sometimes back how Vitesse retained the meat of her Storage Brain after selling to maxim; with Kinetics plus her own sauces, Intellisec, VeriT, low power...
we are bringing an interesting solution to the world!!!!
Am I suffering from IRRATIONAL EXUBERANCE again friends??
please correct me!!
thanks in advance,
Peace

The April 7 announcement also reinforced my thinking as Nuss would share stage with Seagate along with the hated one(brcm) to extol the prowess of this new approach to storage.
Unlike broadcom we can best exploit, add to kinetics.

GARIF, it would make sense, but I don't know if we have any evidence of a licensing agreement at this time. Something has greatly encouraged VTSS to enter yet another market for their products.

"See how a new device-based platform and API developer tools meet the needs of today’s storage infrastructures. The Seagate® Kinetic Open Storage platform is a new class of key/value Ethernet drives plus developers tools and APIs for software-defined, object-oriented, scale-out approaches to data center architecture"
"Seagate Kinetic Storage is:
A new class of key/value Ethernet drives plus developers tools that include an open application programming interface (API) and associated libraries
Designed to provide the simplest semantic abstraction and enable the broadest set of applications through easy-to-use APIs
An efficient platform to maximize innovation"
"An efficient platform to maximize innovation"
In due time we will hear how Vitesse has added to the capabilities of kinetics...

" We expect a total of about $500,000 to $600,000 in the third quarter, higher than the second quarter, due to payment for an IP license."
GARIF, just trying to find a connection with Seagate. still looking for something concrete. one thing I will say is the "higher than the second quarter" makes no sense to me at all.
Posted by christ3opher - 11 years ago
"Why Cisco, Intel, and Qualcomm are funding IoT startups (because it's cheaper to buy the winner, than to fund uncertain internal research)"
Vitesse is probably 5 years away from being able to purchase any company, so my reading between the lines, leads to her securing this kinetic approach and making it better; It's a win win for both companies!
The "connection" are the multiple references and activity with Seagate.
"makes no sense at all" I like it! he saw something which will give us a competitive edge and he jumped on it. Crg mentioned how he already has won designs I believe, which reinforces my reasoning that we've been working with Seagate since last year.
I hope other board members chime in on this theory of mine.
Thanks,

...or, they could maximize VTSS' value and sell, but management has to be willing to get off the gravy train and do what's right to maximize shareholder value. There is no rush to sell at this point obviously.

when one reads the quote:
" We expect a total of about $500,000 to $600,000 in the third quarter, higher than the second quarter, due to payment for a IT license."
what does " higher than the second quarter " mean to you?
Posted by christ3opher - 11 years ago
Billy Martin could probably retrieve that amount from his couch cushions.

Means the company considers the licensed technology a vital piece to leap-frog the competition. The $600,000 could be the final installment, for all we know This "IT" could have cost over a million bucks.
Chris, the company lacks the $ resources to go after many markets outside of licensing her homegrown technology; so her strategy(very smart) is to focus hard in the few areas that she competes in.
"Storage" is the newest area Vitesse has decided to attack so it makes perfect sense TO ME that this $600 plus is going towards that investment. 'IoT' the previous area we attacked indeed is/was a natural, for which Vitesse simply tweaked products to make ready.
"...or, they could maximize VTSS' value and sell, but management has to be willing to get off the gravy train and do what's right to maximize shareholder value. There is no rush to sell at this point obviously."
They are doing it brother! this Storage project is living proof of Vitesse hustle for all of US; Few have done so much with so little $$$ while attached to a troubled past(thanks lou).
Vitesse is making her self RELEVANT, GERMANE to the tech world!!!
BLESS HER HEART!!!!!!!!!!
PEACE

From your keyboard to God's monitor GARIF. You'll have to excuse we veterans of the debacle, always waiting for the other shoe to drop. Things are shaping up so that it looks like not even vtss can screw this up... I will be watching the top line in August.

according to the 2013 10-K annual report Vitesse stated that Software Licenses for the year 2014 would be $8,147,000.
Q1 2014 10-Q Quarterly report states $2,801,000 was paid for Software Licenses.
Q2 2014 10-Q Quarterly report states $1,032,000 was paid for Software Licenses.
there is $4,314,000 remaining to be paid during Q3 and Q4
during Q2 cc stated that between $500,000 and $600,000 would be added to the Software License payment in Q3.
hence the reason why I asked the meaning of "higher than the second quarter". what is left remaining to be owed for Software Licenses in the 3Q and 4Q is higher than the second quarter already, even before adding the $500,000-$600,000. this is why " higher than the second quarter" makes no sense at all to me. but then again what does make sense when it comes to VITESSE?
I can't see paying less than $1,032,000 that was paid in Q2 anyway, with the amount that is still left owed.

Thanks for this Chris,
I had not learned of the above information, based on this revelation it sounds like $500 to $600,000 on top of/in addition to the remaining $4,314,000 balance; either way the company seems to be shelling out money to secure the technology it needs, which should be a good thing.
Operating Leases and Software Licenses
We lease facilities under non-cancellable operating leases. The leases expire at various dates through fiscal year 2016 and
frequently include renewal provisions for varying periods of time, provisions which require us to pay taxes, insurance,
maintenance costs or provisions for minimum rent increases. Minimum leases payments, including scheduled rent increases are
recognized as rent expenses on a straight line basis over the applicable lease term. Lease incentives received are recognized as a
reduction of rental expense on a straight-line basis over the term of the lease. Rent expense, including common area
maintenance expense, under operating leases totaled $3.5 million for fiscal year 2013, $3.0 million for fiscal year 2012, and
$3.8 million for fiscal year 2011.
Software license commitments represent non-cancellable licenses of intellectual property from third-parties used in the
development of our products.
Future minimum lease payments under non-cancellable operating leases that have remaining non-cancellable lease terms in
excess of one year and software licenses are as follows:
2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 Thereafter Total
(in thousands)
Operating leases $ 2,068 $ 1,128 $ 199 $ — $ — $ — $ 3,395
Software licenses 8,147 6,689 2,800 2,800 2,800 — 23,236
Total $ 10,215 $ 7,817 $ 2,999 $ 2,800 $ 2,800 $ — $ 26,631

Was the workshop a DUD? perhaps at a later time they'll share a snapshot with a few takers...
Will Vitesse ever produce a HOMERUN product, a product that will bring us RICHES...? could INTELLISEC be our HOMERUN product??
Posted by GARIF - 11 years ago
If you look on the Vitesse Twitter page: " Looking forward to our Ethernet storage seminar today in Silicon Valley- great turnout, should start shortly ".
who knows if " great turnout " means anything at all. I believe that the many different facets of the Vitesse product line are going to take a lot more of what no one wants to hear, including myself, that being TIME. remember, this is a new form of communications that is evolving. many of the providers are hesitant ( cheap ) about making changes to what they already have. most likely many are uneducated to what is presently available. (reason for the numerous Vitesse expo's (events) being offered).

According to a Tweet just before the seminar:
"Looking forward to our Ethernet storage seminar today in Silicon Valley - great turnout, should start shortly!!"

I have not heard a word since. Hopefully, Nuss did not get his *ss handed to him by people asking for things VTSS could not do.
Intellisec, Veritime, EcoEthernet, ViSAA, etc. Hopefully we'll bring more value to the table than the competition.

Go here and read the "whitepaper" you can link to from the following page:
http://www.vitesse.com/enterprise-ethernet/ethernet-storage
The paper includes the following paragraph, which confirms that VTSS IS working with Seagate and their "Kinetic Architecture":
"An example of such an approach is the Kinetic architecture. The Kinetic architecture was developed by storage equipment manufacturer Seagate Technology, with the goal of encouraging other storage manufacturers to also adopt the architecture to create a vibrant ecosystem. To support this goal, semiconductor technology conforming to the architecture is now available from Vitesse Semiconductor (! - ed.). This white paper explains the new architecture, how Vitesse Ethernet switch and PHY solutions support it, and the benefi ts the total solution provides. The Traditional Data Center Network In this section we explore the communications protocols and connectivity that underlie traditional data center networking. The majority of large data centers are based on the Storage Area Networking (SAN) model, so we will focus on that model in the following sections. As the diagram below shows, both Ethernet and FC are typically used within a data center to support SAN communications. Compute servers typically have two network adapters — an Ethernet-based Network Interface Card to connect to the Data Center LAN, and a FC based Host Bus Adapter to connect to the SAN. The SAN includes a FC SAN switch, which connects the HBAs on the servers to a storage server controlling numerous disk drives housed in one or multiple serial attached storage (SAS) drive enclosures."
Bazinga!!!
Also, from reading the paper, VTSS would also seem to be involved in "OpenDaylight", OpenCompute", and "OpenStack" projects.

Thanks for finding this connection Phobos, my instincts seldom fail me. I've always gotten denied access for Vitesse white-papers how did you get log in access??
INTELLISEC/VeriT are a perfect marriage for this Kinetic's guy!!
Competitors can't touch this! not marvell, Broadcom, Mind(oh that's right mindspeed is no more) my condolences...
