Two things:

1. the time from new product announcement to deployment was really fast for VTSS' new 2.5Gb/s ethernet switch.

2. Aquantia specializes in the data center (a new/recent market).

...but, where is the ramp?

Garif:

evidently Aquantia got a financing as late as 2014.

http://blogs.wsj.com/venturecapital/2014/03/17/semiconductor-company-aquantia-raises-16m-says-its-preparing-for-ipo/

This link indicates the company is thinking of going public and has been making the rounds at investor conferences (sponsored by potential underwriters). If in fact Aquantia is even thinking about going public I have to believe it has revenues a good deal in excess of $1.8 million. But judging from the underwriters at whose conferences Aquantia has been presenting, most notably Needham, I wouldn't think the revenue isn't much above $20 million if that. If the revenue were in the $50 million and above range we would be seeing the bigger brokerage firms interested.

Sounds/seems like this company has been a customer for sometime, user of VeriT and Intellisec...

"Aquantia AQrate PHYs, designed in the 28nm process node, combine 2.5GbE and 5GbE as well as IEEE-compliant 10GBASE-T, 1000BASE-T (1GbE) and 100BASE-TX (100MbE), for transmission over up to 100m of twisted pair cabling. AQrate based products are backward compatible with legacy GbE and 100MbE products allowing for gradual upgrade of equipment. The AQrate PHY family integrates such features as Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE), 1588v2, MACsec and supports all PoE standards up to 60W. All AQrate products are now in production."

"Aquantia’s 28nm generation complies with the following features:
- IEEE 802.3az-2010 Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE). EEE provides significant power savings through the implementation of Low-Power Idle (LPI) modes for a wide range of Ethernet transceivers. As power consumption in data centers continues to be a key focus in the industry, the advent of EEE and Aquantia’s implementation of EEE in its 28nm 10GBASE-T PHY delivers the best power performance metrics for 10GE connectivity
- IEEE 1588v2 Precision Time Protocol (PTP), which provides real-time clock synchronization on network infrastructures
- IEEE 802.1AE Media Access Control Security (MACsec), which enables authentication and encryption of packets between two end-to-end MACsec-capable devices on the network
- Advanced firmware which incorporates 3 generations of interoperability techniques with all 10GBASE-T products shipped to date"

http://www.networkworld.com/article/2835914/networking-hardware/is-your-ethernet-fast-enough-four-new-speeds-are-in-the-works.html

"Aquantia is already producing silicon for ethernet gear that can run at 2.5Gbps or 5Gbps. The process of setting a 2.5Gbps ethernet standard, which might also involve 5Gbps capability, is expected to begin at an IEEE meeting next month."

"Standard" great news for Vitesse

Well, at least they are trying. Remember the under-performing students in school- they get an A for effort.

"Aquantia is the leader in high-speed connectivity solutions for data centers, enterprise and mobile applications. As the number one supplier of 10GBASE-T PHYs in data centers, Aquantia has been consistently the first in the industry to deliver the technology in all process nodes and all port configurations, including the world's first and only 10GBASE-T MAC/PHY device for servers."

Rest assured INTELLISEC is finding a place with this company also!
802.11 is becoming another one of our "foot in the door" products.
Multiple "foot in the door" products is the ingredient for becoming a Billion dollar company.

2012 we had VeriTime
2013 we had INTELLISEC
2014 we have Spark-IV

Could Vitesse be the top surfer of this wave 2, on her way to cannibalizing this opportunity???

Useless,

I think VTSS will be lucky to even get up on Wave 2 let alone be the "top surfer".

VTSS is building for the future, but what if the present never comes?

Having now followed VTSS for some time I am highly suspect of these types of announcements. VTSS has a proclivity to sign agreements with companies that have little or no revenue. In other words the agreements mean nothing whatsoever and show nothing but the ego of engineers and the complete lack of general business acumen. I know nothing about Aquantia but here is a report from their last financing that cites TOTAL REVENUE of $1.8 million, . . . . total. And employees of 16.

http://form-d.findthebest.com/l/152769/Aquantia-Corp

If that revenue estimate is accurate, and I have no idea if it is, This thing is another complete waste of time. But probably another design win (or maybe 25-30 design wins). WE HAVE RECORD DESIGN WINS!!!!

I wonder about VTSS sometimes. This company (Aquantia), as dlog mentioned, has $1.8M in sales (!) It would have been better if VTSS had not mentioned this "design win(s)" at all. It makes it look as if VTSS' management is grasping at straws!

Is this the first 2.5G switch because Aquantia and VTSS are just that good, or because everyone is looking at each other asking "What the hell do we do with a 2.5G switch?"

It's incredible. Could Camarillo please re-affirm top-line guidance?

Aquantia has received $160M in funding from a number of prominent venture capital firms and semiconductor manufacturers. Their revenue is not made public. They claim to hold 70% of the market for 10GBase-T chips, used for low cost high speed internet over existing wiring. HP notes that the market for 10GBase-T is "positioned to accelerate dramatically over the next few years" and has already jumped from 500K server ports in 2012 to 5 million ports in 2013. I see this win as a nice incremental growth opportunity for VTSS.

At the time of the last round--a $21 million injection it got midway through 2011--the company was eagerly awaiting the launch of Intel Corp .'s Romley platform, a motherboard design that marks the first time 10 Gigabit Ethernet will be available in a server, eliminating the need for customers to buy a separate, expensive networking card to get that level of bandwidth over copper wiring.
That product was expected at the end of last year, but wasn't released until about two months ago. That caused Aquantia to need more money than it had anticipated to bulk up its inventory as orders begin to come in bigger volumes, said Phil Delansay , the company's vice president of business development.
Although companies that specialize in 10 Gigabit Ethernet over copper have been perpetually promising that the market for their chips was right around the corner, it's finally been ushered in with availability of Intel's Romley, Delansay said. "We don't have to say it's going to start and pick up. It has started."

"All that activity hasn't changed the competitive landscape for Aquantia , Delansay said. The company has always seen Broadcom Corp . as the company to beat and that hasn't changed at all, he said."

The above is some of the skinny on this company,
In helping this company Vitesse is taking a bite out of the hated one, ALSO.

thanks, thereinman

Good article GARIF.

GARIF's article above and this article:

http://www.edn.com/electronics-products/other/4435985/Comms-processors-match-PHYs-for-faster-Ethernet-over-legacy-cable

tie Aquantia to VTSS' customer Freescale, and the justification and market for switches at 2.5G and 5G.

I feel a little better now, but I would still like to hear news of VTSS' top line.

Awesome article phobos!

"The other big player is the NBase-T Alliance, formed in late October by Cisco Systems, Xilinx, Freescale and Aquantia, a company that’s already making 2.5G/5G components."

I like this groups chances, anytime you have the big Gorilla(cisco) behind you, nine out of ten you will win...
This would equal hitting the lottery for Vitesse!!!!!!!!!
