"“Because compute resources and virtual machines generally need to connect at Layer 2 (! - ed.), or the Ethernet layer, using MEF connection concepts to connect customers and devices to the Cloud to create revenue-generating services makes complete sense,” added Martin Nuss, CTO at Vitesse. “Automation of both network infrastructure and connectivity will be essential, as the number of connected endpoints proliferates well beyond what any human could handle. At Vitesse, our tightly integrated turnkey silicon-plus-software solution already enables this vision, supporting SDN-programmable APIs into MEF CE 2.0 service orchestration, and we are excited to help drive standardization as part of the MEF Third Network initiative.”"

I really post all the stuff that I do because I like to look at a lot of data points. Sometimes it's just a lot of noise, but sometimes it turns up something interesting. I didn't have to look very hard for the article above.

VTSS recognizes that with small cells and IoT, and all the other aspects of how Ethernet will find new applications in the coming years, that a lot of the networks intelligence will have to migrate from layers 3-7 down to layer 2 and that layers 3 through 7 will have to deal with even more processing than they already do.

Someone like a Cavium processes information using NPUs in layers 3-7 (along with everyone else it seems http://www.cavium.com/pdfFiles/M40_Cavium_Rpnt.pdf ). VTSS seems to be the only company offloading some of that capability into the layer 2 hardware. The VTSS article above states "...as the number of connected endpoints proliferates well beyond what any human could handle."

Couldn't we extend this to 'what any centralized processor could handle', as well? ...what cannot be handled by the NPU; timing, encryption, and basic switching, could be done by intelligent layer 2 hardware. It will free-up the NPUs to focus on SDN, NFV, and SON. THIS is where VTSS is headed, and it sounds like a winner.

I'm not selling anything or endorsing anything. I'm just posting like everyone else (maybe a little more often).

Thanks for the kudos Tech.

Vitesse has done her homework, no wonder many have turned to her for MEF compliance.
One can only please some of the people most of the time, thanks again phobos!!

" "Automation of both network infrastructure and connectivity will be essential, as the number of connected endpoints proliferates well beyond what any human could handle."

I used to think it would take at least 200 years(starting say 2010) for us to give up the farm to our creations, for them to enslave us, or even eliminate us from existence(reasoning we are the worst animal for a more cohesive planet).

Since 2010 I see where we are moving at a feverish pace to empower our gadgets more and more; literally every month some company touts the smartness of their latest gadget...

I've adjusted my calender to the next 100 years! meaning in my lifetime(hopefully 50 more years) I will see some of the early consequences of our stupidity(sorry MIT/Cal tech/Ivy league minds but you're not as smart as you think or perhaps your bosses are to blame, but either way we will all pay a high price for the decisions of a few).

I know, I know just more of my useless nonsense... I hope my premonitions are nothing more then idle foolish thoughts.

Peace

Are you familiar with Ray Kurzweil's "singularity" GARIF?

I am now phobos! hell we could loose the farm sooner then later...

" He says this will lead to a technological singularity in the year 2045, a point where progress is so rapid it outstrips humans' ability to comprehend it."

"Kurzweil predicts machine intelligence will be infinitely more powerful than all human intelligence combined."

" Afterwards, Kurzweil says, intelligence will radiate outward from the planet until it saturates the universe."

He means "Hal's brain will saturate the universe! you recall what happened when we humans simply suspected he might have made a mistake??

Will some of our grand kids return someday and cry about how we allowed ourselves to become owned????

Oh, sorry GARIF, you beat me to the post.

We always think of ourselves as the center of the universe and the end of history. We could also be just one more evolutionary dead-end in progress. Time will tell.

True to that Phobos! we used to believe the sun evolved around us remember. Yea we could be another "dead-end", but sadly one with the real potential of taking down the blue balloon.

In the mid sixties I happened upon a Jaguar drinking water from a stream, needless to say I ran home and passed out; after they awoke me I explained nervously I had seen a black tiger...

Fast forward to 1990 and the whole area is devoid of forest! we are the lone animal that does not blend into his surroundings.

What does that have to do with Vitesse and friends? I no longer walk tropical beaches barefoot because of the litter from our tech toys, specially after storms!!
